- In the year 2000, approximately one million people worldwide died by suicide: a "global" mortality rate of 16 per 100,000, or one death every 40 seconds.
- Worldwide, more people die by suicide than homicide and war.
- Suicide crosses all cultural, economic and social boundaries. Many people who die by suicide appeared to be functioning well prior to their death. It can happen to anyone.
- Ninety per cent of people who engage in suicide-related behaviours are experiencing depression, other mental health issues, or have an addiction.
